gday all.
finaly got around to fitting the new steering rack then fitting the rebuilt front sub frame to my car today.

anyway question regarding the steering rack.
i got it from northern minis..$225 brand new not reconditioned..fitted it...lined it up with the hole etc...all bolted up ok..all new bolts ect...new steering tie rod ends, i asked about a seal bettween the rack and the body but he said he has never hered of one???is there one as there is gap between the rack and body also another problem when i turn the wheels the rack makes a grinding noise??i checked to see if it was hiting on the edge of were it goese threw into the car but all looks ok..was i ment to greese the rack b4 fitting or something??.it dosent sound normal to me..

any advice would be great..

thanks.
from Brien.

My grinding noise was wheels rubbing. Which requires hammering, and adjustiing hi-los. Greasing? Shouldn't need it. I got reconditioned one. BTW i believe they are oiled not greased?? There is no seal between rack and body. Mine had a felkt washer between rack and pinon bit and body but I don't think that was original I checked it away. It didn't seem useful and was hacked up.

the rack made this noise even b4 i bolted it all up...not sure ...now if ive done something wrong.
also there is a seal that slides onto the part that sticks threw the floor that the steering colum bolts onto.
it looks like a pice of foam that squeezes just like a bush to stop water getting in.

got this from the minimania site .

Image

cant believe no one has used this as i can clearly see a gap betwen the rack and floor witch water can get in.

easy to make one up out of rubber...so if the rack needs to be taken out ill make one up.

brand new racks shouldn't make grinding noises!! are you absolutely sure it is the rack....maybe something else is fouling or dragging in the front suspension
