In the old days we used to fit an `amp meter' (correct spelling = ammeter) but this involves putting big wiring (that will handle all the car's current flow, except starter) behind the dash. There is a fire risk unless done properly.
A Voltmeter is more useful, it will tell you your battery charge level and only needs light wiring to connect it up.
Neither were factory fitted. I have a voltmeter in the boat, but have never felt the need for one in the Minis.
