Sir Alec Issigonis 1906-2006
Alec Issigonis was born in Smyrne-Turkey 18th November 1906.
In 1922 he and his family were exiled to Malta by the British Navy.At the age of 15 he arrived in London, and started studing Engineering and got a job at Morris Motor Company.
He designed the Morris Minor. The small car was not at first very popular, but when the Suez crisis brought rationing, BMC asked him to design an efficient small car-the new designed was to be known as the Mini. The Mini soon became the best selling car in Europe.
To honour his sucess,he was knighted by the Queen in 1969.He retired from Austin Rover in 1971,and suffering from Parkinson's disease,he was only able to stay on as a consultant until 1987.
Sir Alec passed away on 2nd October 1988.
The Mini defines his disign philosophy-Less is More :)
We celebrate him today while we drive and work on our Minis :)

Sorry Ian , was a bit cruel .... It's a lot clearer on the book in the flesh and they've edited the sliding window's line off the pic on the passenger side .
