you've gotta stand on one leg, close your left eye and bite your tongue so hard that it bleeds.... then it'll come out like a greased pig from a sewer pipe...
I have done it with the wheelboxes intact, you've gotta pull it down, and rotate the whole assembly away from you - but it's only worked for me once or twice
seriously, the easiest way is to disassemble the drivers side wheelbox, if it's a post '68 car, there are 2 x 5/16 (or 3/8, can't remember) nuts, the plate comes off the bottom and a small piece of tube from the end - then take the cable out of just that wheelbox and the other wheel box and the main tube ought to come out pretty easily
make sure the retaining strips for the loom etc. are bent away from the tubing - they stop it coming down to where you need it
it's a crap job, getting it back in is worse, just takes perseverence
