Took EmFa in for a rego check today, failed because of the steering wheel. Apparently there is not to be any chrome on the steering wheel. He said "spose you will have to paint it black or something". . . . .what a tosser ! !.

Wow, hope not... mine ah, its black... hmmm

Well, I would just wrap it in tape (electrical or gaffa) and rego the thing... then take it off.
Rego rules are STUPID!!!!

If you have 1 nut holding your wheel on, it fails.
Whack a hub cap on, and it passes (only what they can see)... so whats the point of the inspections then...

Oh well..

Peter

Call the RTA and report him. He is wrong, very very wrong.
Your car was built before ADR's and metal steering wheels were a factory option.
Or you could wrap the spokes in tape like pristic said. 8)

i guess anal-ystically it could prove to temporarily blind and distract you.

i would colour it in with a permanent marker for the test and use turps to remove it after

Mate I feel for you, when I first put this through rego the engineer made me cover all reflective surfaces (with my daughters water paint :D ) and the blue slip guy said that RTA had dropped that rule so check with RTA newcastle and if he is wrong let him know as the book they work from is probably out of date

I feel sorry for you mate. I have almost the exact same steering wheel in my car (although i put mine in after wards). Sounds like the kind of guy that would argue 4 inches isn't 100mm.

It's not that the steering wheel is metal-it's the nice shine from the chrome when the sun hits it.Same as chrome wiper arms-not allowed.

I was just so pissed off ya know. What a load of bull dust. Thanks for all the advice, think I will ask the RTA before I go painting stuff black.

Water colours is a great idea, thanks Jon. :)

There's a section on their website that lets you ask questions like this , not sure where it is but I found it last I looked and it only took 48 hours to get a reply on it (not bad by rta standards ....) , failing that , did he give you the white part of the pink slip saying what was needed ? If so , take it into your local rta office and show them and ask for the ruling .

Did he white slip you ???????
Masking tape is a quick fix if he did - if he didn't then go somewhere else.

The beauty of a club plate system is that on a club plate inspection day, the cars are inspected by people who understand that a historic, veteran, vintage car is loved and is an part of Australia's living history. Imagine the cost if the government had to finance the cost of keeping this automobile history.

Yes - I know, a lot of these cars are daily drivers or not eligible for historic registraion but.... Inspectors need to respect them as historic icons not potential sims metal

Right. That is why I taked about ADR's.
Look at the dash, chrome speedo, chrome wipers, chrome ashtray (allright, the ashtray is missing), chrome guages.
Minis built before ADR's don't have to comply with ADR's.

why would you paint it or wrap it in tape when you can just put a stocko one on to get through the pits?

You could do , but if the guy's obviously wrong and is going to do the same to every other person then why not set him straight ?
