Does your car have a compliance plate? (My guess is no.)
You do not have to worry about ADR12.
Like I said before this ADR is for all shiny things in your field of vision including the speedo, wipers, top of dash, etc. The fact that he picked on the steering wheel and left the rest alone proves that he has no idea.

Call the RTA technical branch at Blacktown and ask them why the pink slip station knocked your car for a shiny steering wheel.

Update

I emailed the RTA and here is their response -

"I can only assume that the examiners problem with the steering wheel is
the glare caused by light reflection off the chrome.

If this is the case, "Glare Reduction" is an Australian Design Rule (ADR
12) which was introduced for vehicles built from January 1973.

This means that your vehicle, being 1964 build date, doesn't need to
comply to the Glare Reduction ADR.

If the problem is to do with the construction of the steering wheel,
this is only an issue for vehicles built from January 1971. ie: ADR 10.

If you have any other enquiries, don't hesitate to reply or contact
Technical Enquiries on 1300 137 302."

Thanks to everyone that gave advice, I am a happy little Mini Man once again. . . . .wish I could take a photo of the look on his face when I hand him a copy of the email.

Well done , let us know how you go with the intelligent individual that caused all this stress in the first place ... Interesting though that they said it only applied to pre January 73 vehicles , a lot of clubbie owners will now be wondering about their wheels but I can't see it being a real problem , you're the first one here that's mentioned it .

Just be very careful how you talk to this individual....use an unemotional look I have done some research approach rather than "listen you Tosser"....they can make life harder for you than any points scoring you may make with head office :(

During my long life I have met a few idiots and tossers - the single biggest problem they have is that they don't recognise the intellectual challenge they face each awakening hour.

Some have even refused to accept that they have a challenge - sigh !!!!!!!

I was very cool, calm and collected. I handed him a copy of the email and explained it all to him in a very friendly calm manner. He then apologized and failed EmFa on the brakes. So I took her to another inspection station and she passed without problem.

Work that one out ???

In the interest of libel and defamation please do not identify the mechanic's full name or the place of buisiness .

That sounds about normal. I am glad that the second bloke passed it OK.

Did the first goose write out a white slip when he complained about the wheel? (A white slip is the repairs needed for a pink slip) If he did and then failed it on something else again he could get in trouble.

My mini passed rego with chrome all around my instruments and a giant chrome block smack in the middle of my dash with a clock/temp/humidity meters on it.

Who looks down at their steering wheel when driving?!
