Can you identify the capped lead through the firewall. This should be connected to one side of the solenoid.

The White/Red should be on the next connection, which should a lug.

Can you identify the thick capped lead to the starter motor. This should go to the other side of the solenoid.

you have three connections on your solenoid? Yes?

theres the 2 bolts.. a big spade on one side and a small spade on the other side of the left hand bolt... and another small spade in the centre underneath the mounted "bolt" part...

Your car now has two solenoids. One on the starter and the normal mini one, you need to rearrange the wiring to suit the new starter. (or fit the old starter)
But, it seem like you have another wire in the wrong spot to make the alt light come on with the key off. If you do get it to start you will not be able to turn it off!

Maybe u should just give minis a miss in general and buy and automatic fuel injected small japanese car. Im all for people having a go themselves so that they learn some mechanical skills, but u really need to have some idea to begin with, or take notes, make diagrams, take photos..... Something..... U cant just go hell for leather and pull crap off a car and expect it to all work when it all goes back together....

Even if the thing does ever run again, the state of that wiring is just asking for trouble, maybe even a small fire!!!

Ok, good.

Now to get the new starter working....

On the solenoid there is a little wire that goes onto a flat push terminal, this is from the key. (if you pull it off and thun the key the click should stop)
On your new starter where the cable from the old solenoid goes on there should be a small flat terminal. The wire from the key goes to this. You may need to extend the wire.

On the soleniod there are two cables that bolt on, one is from the battery and the other goes to the starter. Hook both of them to the same post. (as well as the other one with the brown wires)

so get rid of the old solenoid ? and put all the wire from it onto the new one ?

You can get rid of it but I would use to to join the cables.

Good thinking. It would be better to have someone that knows what they are looking at to do it.
But on the other hand, the sparks look better in the dark.
