So im looking at some smiths tachos and ive found a few but there for V8s or 6s how easy is it to swap them for use with a 4 cylinder? I know some have a switch on the back but for the ones that dont what do you do?

Should I buy whatever one I can find and convert it, or should I only buy one that came of a 4 Cylinder motor?

depends in they are the magnetic induction type, the ecu type or tach generator type.

Im lost now arbt they all the same? Im guesing smiths never made one for ECUs as there old so whats this magnetic induction type? is this what you use if you run it of the coil or magneto? and the generator type???

I have an ecu one installed in my daily driver as we speak. Smiths made them in from about 1974.

The magenetic induction is the type determines rpm from a spinning disk, like an electronic ignition or speedo.

The generator type has a generator connected to a cam. The voltage ouptput determines the the rpm shown. Eg each .5v = 500rpm so 12v=6000rpm etc.

I also forgot the square wave ones that run off the coil/ei.

I have had all of them intstalled in different cars through the years.

Just make sure you get one of the correct type for your car.

ok then whats the correct type then for a mini???.. For now its just gonna have a standard 998.

Some of the cheap tachos simply have a 4, 6, 8 switch on them, my expensive autometer one required me to cut 2 wires that were hangin out the back of the tacho (crude) if i left 1 of them connected it was for a 6, or if both were connected it was for an 8....
