Both the column splines and the rack splines are soft metal and hammering will destroy the splines and you run the risk of steering failure at the worst possible moment

I know this part well, my mate wrote off a clubman paddock basher (well it hasn't moved since) while we were transporting some irrigation piping on an apple orchard.

Since he couldn't see I was sitting on the bonnet and directing. Spline let go and we hit a fence post at about 40km/hr. I did the turbo boost running man off the bonnet and he bashed his head on the wheel. This was after the battery exploded from him chucking a shovel in the boot.

Quite funny but I wouldn't have liked the to happen on the road so make sure you tighten properly and spline is good as Mike said.

And I didn't get the couple of things done on my car that needed do-ing. I think everyone can come to my place and do the oil change etc on Ribena

Actually, the other thing that's worrying me is a noise - think I've tracked it down though. Might this be wheel bearing noise? is the name of the thread I started last week about it.

Sorry I couldn't stay too long on Sat folks, but I enjoyed scraping all the crud off the top of Actions block. When will it be running true Jakko ?

Action m8, go and see peter at BMC and get yourself 3 (think...maybe it's 4...) thermostat gaskets, go home and spend time scraping off every single bit of old gasket and crap from the various components - then re-assemble using gasket gooly gum and not silicone. Silicone contains acid and will eventually make you wish you had never used it on your car - although it's great on shower screens etc. Also, clean out the 3 holes in the cylinder head that it all bolts on to.
