whats the deal with the magnet and a hanky, lol?

please explain yo

The idea is that you check for body filler using the magnet with a Hanky between it and the paint so you dont scratch it.....

Bog (devil material  ) is not magnetic.
The hankey is to protect the paint between the magnet and the metal (or bog possibly). It's a simple trick that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. You could spend a good half hour checking every little patch - just check the more common rust places.

The trick is to mix metal filings in with the bog or use steel wool as reo on the big holes.
Beats the magnet test!

Morris 1100 I don't like you for this coment :x

Yes it is to check for bog and could be the differance between a good and a bad Car. I did this to a number of EH Holdens (Yes I owned a Holden but it was a classic) before I found one without any rust. This is specialy good trick in Second Car dealerships that do a quick sprayjob to make a carlook pretty good

The best part about the steel wool in the bog is it rusts a lot quicker than BMC steel and will need fixing again very soon, but you should have just enough time to sell it to some sucker!

just remember that most are over 30 years old now and will not be perfect. Most rust will be in foot wells and boot. if the steering feels tight, the brakes feel strong, the motor pulls nicely and the rust isnt to bad then you are on to a good thing. There isnt really to much to a mini, so get yourself a repair manual from a mini shop and learn abit about the car so if something does go wrong you may know what the problem could be.

plus you have this great site to help you out :D

check for smokey exhaust
funny noises from trans/engine
rust bubbles
boot and back and front floor under carpet look for holes/rust bubbles
do brakes stop and stop in line
have a look at the oil cap too for signs of melting as a sign of engine previously being overheated

I have been around a long time and seen a lot of dodgy things but I have never been a salesman, I am the worst car salesman that ever lived. I can't sell cars I just keep them forever!
