well recently molly has had timing issues i think.

a while ago she started losing power in 3rd i belive because one cyclinder wasn't firing properly, i took all the spark plugs out and one was all grungy and seemed to be the problem, so i replaced it and sure enough to an extent the problem was fixed.

just recently though it has gotten worse and seems to be doing the same thing but wores in 2nd 3rd and 4th.

any sugestiongs, is all i need a new dizzy cap? should i check something?

(i'm gonna check the spark plugs again, see if it is allready grungy again)

i have until january 10th before i really need molly on the road workling properly

Check the plugs again and see if the same one is fouling again , there's a chance there could be a problem with the cap or lead to that plug , but also look further . How's Molly's vital signs (not using more oil or water , no mayonaise type gunk under the oil filler cap , not running hot etc ?) apart from the losing power ?

yep it's the spark plug in the same cyclinder again, gone all grungy, the others are a little black and where the uppy curvy bit is they have a white powder on them that doesn't come off but the actual sparky bit is nice and clean this odd one though the whole thing is black and it seams the sparky bit is covered in it to. (brand new plug)

i have noticed her fuel consumption isn't as good as it was and in the high revs she works better (might explain her fuel consumption)

any diagnosis? whats the cure?

any more info needed?

Do a compression test on all 4 cylinders to check there's not an underlying problem , try a different dist cap if you have one or can borrow one and also another lead to that plug . Have a look in cush's post in here about plug whisperer's too .

You'll need to get a compression tester (supercheap or similar have them) and get someone to give you a hand but it's fairly straightforward , basically take all the plugs out and hold the compression testers rubber plug end in the spark plug hole while someone cranks the motor over (best disconnect the HT lead from the coil to the distributer or you might get a zap from the leads etc ....) . As for the lead etc is the plug the one that was fouled at the start of all this or did you replace the plugs when you noticed it was fouled ? If you replaced them just clean the plug and check/reset the plug gap and try it with the other cap and lead . If it's the original then check another plug . Have you checked the gaps on the plugs ?

borrowed a mates cap and leads, molly now is firing nicely.

a new top entry cap is $18 leads are $25, so i'm ok with forking out that money before i go down to syd. a side entry cap is $97, but my plastic rain cover dosen't fit one of those anyway.

thanks for the help sports850, and thanks again for the rain cover aswell.

A side entry cap is for an 850 distributer and won't fit yours , do you remember the one I pulled out of the sports850 when you were here , it's a side entry one and the leads are held in with grub screws . You're after the one which the leads just plug into . I think there were 2 different types though so be careful to get the right type .
