I'm thinking of getting a thermostat housing that has provision for the temp sender probe as well as using the regular one in the head.

This is so I can still have the original temp light in the speedo and have a full dial gauge as well. The two senders will not be far apart but which would give the best result for the gauge - the head or the housing?

im assuming the head because you would rather no the temp of the head rather then the water that is sitting on top of the thermostate (im thinking thats where it would be)
wat would happen if your thermostate breaks, i guess having the to would be a bonus, but for the guage id prolly say the head

I have both, the original position is connected to the ecu, the thermostat one is the gauge for driver.

Thermostat one reads higher temp by about 2 degs at 110degC(almost boiling), I think this is because the aluminium housing itself is hotter than the cast iron head, resulting in a higher reading. If anything the coolant temp should be lower as heat loss is already taking place (not much but it shouldn't be higher).

As to you Q, it don't matter what position, so long as it's covered in coolant/water. I think the response time of the gauge is more important, so you know when there is a change and can deal with it.

I saw these fitted to old Morris Minors. Is the outlet still pointing in the right direction or is it a late Rover Mini part?

Won't the temp sender hit the rocker cover with that unit (on a mini assuming 1275 head)?

Ps - I tapped the thread into mine, I think 3/8NPT and bought the brass adaptor from autometer (only due to space issues though).

I have both temp senders in mine 1275 engine standard guage in the thermo housing and the capilliery constant read guage in the head And it works very well most times they are pretty consistant but sometimes are a little different I trust the one in the head more .

Hi Guys,
Way back in '66, I seized my 998 Riley Elf after the wax thermostat failed and stayed shut. The sender was a thermostat mounted one and the gauge never suggested there was too much wrong, it was perhaps just a little higher than normal. All of a sudden, the engine loaded up and I came to a halt. The poor little thing was crackling, steaming and smoking and basically stuffed! Warranty fixed it but I often wondered why the sender was sited there in the first place, not the choicest position in my mind.
