Actually, it's not needed for engine removal, as the engine goes up the shafts pull themselves out.
However, a ball joint splitter is a valuable tool on a mini, as is a 1 & 5/16" impact socket, and a very large hammer. :D

Mate have you tried putting an engine in with ball joints in tact and races sticking into the bay??? it's hard enough with balljoint off!

I agree

Lifting an engine with the pot joints intact and the ball joints in place is just hanging a car by its front end.

I have heard about moving a partially engine left and right to get the engine out and when I tried it, it just didn't happen.

Don't stuff around - drop the top ball joints and be done with it.
