Hand tight.
Not as tight as you can manage either, you'll know when it's right. :D

For ryco filter it says to turn 2/3rds of one turn after contact with gasket, this is easily achieved by hand. Just check for leaks after warming engine up

I assume a spin-on. Slightly more than hand tight...unless your name is Schwarzenegger.

The idea is to bring the rubber gasket up to the mating face and then slightly compress it....say 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after contact with the filter wrench.

The last thing you want is for the filter to unscrew through vibration and dump your oil.

make sure you've oiled the rubber lip otherwise you'll have a hell of a time getting it off
