Steve,
The waft you see coming out of the RHS carby is normal, in fact it is a burnt oil fumes that are par for the course. A usual Cooper S engine runs a PCV valve that prevents you from seeing it. Next time you stop the car lift the oil cap and you should see a feint waft of smokey stuff in there. It means it has been running. Always a good sign you car still works. G.
