That has a bit going for it.
Its a fully imported brit car. Has clubman taillights, roundy speedo, brit grill and a brake booster. Its a small bore motor but did you happen to notice what size the wheels were ????- It may just have discs.

Has australian doors thought and an australian bonnet

But it's got Australian doors with 1/4 windows and external hinges . Well worth saving though and as it's been registerred in NSW it can be again rather than being some dodgy thing someone bought in 10 years ago but didn't register .

I reckon it might be an Aussie Mini Deluxe or K with Clubby tail lights and a UK Mark 3 grille and heater. The boot lid is Aussie, as is the speedo and doors.

Did you get a look at the rain gutters at the corners? If there is two drilled holes, it's an Aussie shell. If there's a single pressed in slot, it's a UK shell.

The bonnet doesn't have the lip at the front to suit the UK grilles top bit either , a few bits seem to point to either version though , is it just me or does the rear window look like the wider UK version ? Any chance of getting the numbers off the ID plate ?

it has been suggested to me by someone who would know that it may be a NZ import.
The old guy who is the owner of the mechanic shop said whilst it has dry suspension it also has all the fittings for wet. I believe he said it does have disc breaks but you can understand from its location that I am fairly reluctant to lay down on the ground and take a look underneath due to the likelyhood of encountering some sort of venomous australian native, albeit with no legs or eight. Even opening the bonnet and doors is done with extreme caution. It literally has not been moved in 19 years.
These guys in Bourke know a bit about Mini's as they were the Morris Dealership for many years.
Take a look at the emblem stuck on one of there windows, which I have offered to buy and replace with new glass.

matt 848 was an ealier logon of mine when I thought I had secured an 850. Unfortunately i missed out by a bees thingy. Seeing as my now mini doesn't have its original engine 848 was given the flick. Accidently logged into it this afternoon without realising.
Long way of saying; "to save any confusion Matt 848 & Matt850 are one in the same".

The rear window doesn't look wide enough to me, but I'm prepared to be corrected if I'm wrong. :?

It is an Australian Mini Deluxe, you can see half the BMC Australia ID plate! The Booster is a VH44.

The only pommie thing is the grille.
A pommie car with Clubman tail lights and that grille would have internal hinges and bigger back window.

My big thanks to matt850 - I shall soon own my first Mini, all the way from Bourke! :D

I spoke to the NSW RTA and they gave me some interesting information:

If a vehicle is not claimed from a mechanic / repairer within 3 months, the owner's title lapses and ownership passes to the garage. If you purchase a vehicle and there is no certificate of registration, ensure you get a receipt stating: buyer's name, seller's name / address / signature, rego # of the vehicle, VIN or chassis #, engine #, purchase date and purchase price.

So that's the rule in NSW at least. In normal circumstances I guess the owner / their family / insurance company / etc would claim the vehicle within that period and I assume the garage would be entitled to claim storage fees in addition to the bill for the work done. In this case, they tried contacting the guy and even their letters were returned to sender. No one came for it or to even pay the bill and here we are many years later about to enter 2007...

So now it's just a matter of arranging the transport down to Canberra and getting started. Say, anyone on here know how to fix a Mini...? nyuk nyuk nyuk

welcome to the intriguing world of Minis.

For it to be a Mini Deluxe, it is sure different. Just a quick observation of the pics shows up a number of oddities. Apart from the English grille, it appears to be fitted with a two speed wiper and the wipers appear to be fitted in indented holes on the scuttle. It is also fitted with a generator, discontinued in 1967. The front bumper is not a deluxe version, more a clubman. However, all will be revealed when you can get hold of it and clean it up to get all the ID numbers. There are a number of Ausmini members in Canberra that will help you out.

Congrats on the buy, looks like it can be turned into a nice machine.

The Deluxe got the changed pattern wipers (Mid 68 ) and the generator was on all the Deluxes and the changeover was the K.
My guess is still a Deluxe. The prefix on the plate should be YMA2S2

I'm tempted to get the engine & gearbox taken out en route in Sydney for rebuilding, then start cleaning up the body etc at home in Canberra.

What do you learned folks think - is this too much too soon?
