Does anybody know of the practice of registering late model rover japanese minis with aussie build compliance plates? I've been told this practice exists, its probably not widespead and relies on an inspectors ignorance or turning a blind eye.

When a car is inspected for rego, where does the inspector draw the line?

For example, I could transfer all the parts of a race import 1999 built mini, into my mini deluxe or mini s, is that legal? How far can you go? Can I use 2/3 of the japanese shell as well?

Can you cut out and transfer the compliance plates and body number from an aussie car into a late model car?

Has anybody attempted or heard of an attempt to register a late model rover mini as a aussie BMC/Leyland product?

I'm not supporting fraud or illegal activites, I'm only interested on how far you can go.

Putting everything into an Aussy shell is perfectly legal.

Changing things in the shell like Rover doors, windows, etc would require an engineers cert (from what I understand).

Changing compliance plates and body numbers is illegal.

The old compliance plate swap has been done a bit, I've seen a lot of minis like that.
Always comes across as dodgy. I'd go with the fit all bits into a BMC shell.
There's advantages of using Aussie shells not often considered, like cheaper insurance premiums and easier to get parts.

Hay, it's not about the car, it's not about the venue, it's about the people that come here. Peter Dwyer, Mayor of Hay NSW.

swapping compliance plates is highly illegal. get caught and expect to go to goal. Simple really. If you want to go down that route, just get the thng Complianced properly. Fact is, now that you have mentioned it on here you will be watched by those that import and comliance cars.

Cheers

I know a guy in Adelaide who tried to give it a go and wasn't apssed my Transport SA as you can't put a Rover body on a BMC/Leyland plate. They said you can re-body cars with the same brand but not of a different one. You see Leyand and BMC are considered the same as BMC became Leyland but Rover is considered a different entity. In Transport SA's eyes anyways.

Yes, I know that, MG and sprite people have been swaping plates for years with replacement B and sprite/midget UK built heritage shells. None of them have gone to goal. Seems to be different rules for different cars.

The law/regulations seem to be inconsistent. What's the situation in the eastern states like NSW and Queensland?

I wasn't advocating breaking the law, only was asking how far legally you can go.

They are starting with a brand new , unused shell from a factory that hasn't had a body number assigned to it , you could do the same to a rover mini with a heritage shell without any problems legally here , but from memory heritage don't do Aussie style bodies so it's a bit hard to go that way . As for putting an Aussie plate onto a race only imported shell as well as getting done for changing compiance plates the govt would be after you for import duties it may have missed out on by being an off road only shell . You can in most if not all states use all the mechanicals in an Aussie produced shell (as Doogie has done) but simply transferring compliance or ID plates is highly illegal and fraudulent . Activities like this are not condoned on ausmini and not to be discussed here as stated in the rules .

I don't think Tezza was advocating being illegal. I think Tezza just wanted advice on how to achieve what she wants without breaking the law.

Best thing to do is contact and write a letter to your locl transport authority and get their opinion, as in the end it's what they say that determines whether or not your car is a waste of time or indeed a road legal car.

I know , but we need to be clear on the rules here before people start giving first hand info on what is being done if it is illegal .
