What sort of battery cut off switch do people have in their Minis and where is it placed in/on the car????

Not really a battery cut off, but ive got 2 hidden kill switches. 1 is for the 12v to the coil and the other is in the starter solenoid circut. Once they are closed then u just push a button and it starts.

I dont know what mine does exactly, but its located next the the driver side wheel arch, down below the ignition... and it works.

I was thinking about putting one in. Are they expensive, or is it something you could get a mechanic mate to do for a couple of beers?

Ahemm , most of the people mentioning them so far are using them as a secret ignition cutout switch to help prevent the car being stolen , not something they would post pic's of on a forum ... You can hide a switch anywhere in the car you can get a wire to and hook it to earth out the negative ( is it ???) side of the coil to stop the power getting to the coil and therefore sparking .

Is that the type of thing you were originally asking about smokie or were you thinking the big red key you see on the battery cable in race cars ?

So I am now asking where you can put those big red key ones and also is there a different kind I can use???

yeah i highly recomend that cut out switch, you can steal my mini with a set of aligator clips and a screw driver,

you can have i have 2 switches in different locations, 1 is for the coil and the other is for the fuel pump, if the 1st does nt stop him the other will, its has nt gone on the raod or rego'd but i can see my self reversing out of the space at the carpark a it cutting out,

the bloke i bought my clubby off (still a good mate) has a formula V and has an imboliser that is like a relay, power goes through is and it will close the make contact with the 2 sides work like a relay,

I've got a basic thing on the Triton utes battery , it's basically a red plastic coated round nut that holds pressure on the join of the battery cable to the terminal clamp , loosen the round nut and the connection is broken . Not quite the same as the race car type but when I was having a few electrical gremlins it was quicker to disconnect the power than grab the spanner and remove the terminal clamp . Apart from that , I've seen people mount a small plate beside the battery in the boot with the red key switch on it , also mounted in the drivers floor near where the original push button starter was but not sure if you'd keep kicking it or not as it's bigger than the starter button . The positive battery cable is directly under the floor there and it's a handy spot .

The ones CAMS require nowadays are a double acting cutout switch / battery isolator. As well as cutting the supply from the battery to the starter solodoid (and then on to the fuse box etc) there is a secondary switch which is wired into the ignition circuit to cut the engine immediately. With just the battery isolated it is still possible for the engine to run with power being generated by the generator, so the cut out switch eliminates that. CAMS also requires that it can be operated from outside the car via a cable to somewhere near the drivers side A-pillar.
You can buy a battery isolator switch pretty cheaply at Repco, Autobarn etal, but the combination switch is much more expensive and usually only available through motorsport outlets like Revolution.
The switch on my Brick is on a fabricated panel at the right hand end of the dash. The external cable goes through the door jamb.

The eBay one above is the one I have to install. Got it on special somewhere for $8.50 I'll only be using it when parked for a long period and I'm leaving the vehicle out of sight
