yep, CFRP is the real deal as used in motorsport/aviation. It is made under pressure and heat in an autoclave is very strong. The matting is effectively bonded together with the fibre running at angles to get strength in multiple planes.
Laid up carbon fibre mating is made like fibreglass and is nowhere near as strong, infact it about the same as fibreglass or rayon. Its the same process as fibreglass with layers of carbonfibre mating glued to together with epoxy or the like. It can delaminate if not made correctly and usually made with strrength in one plane.
Massive price difference
