bnicho try a bloke in camden nsw called peter l. smith engineering as he was able to get our 1999 and several other cars imported and fully complianced.
as you have all rightly said it is a hassle and much better to get someone who can deal with the customs and import laws BEFORE importing the car.
ever wonder why they have customs auctions ? the owners bring in the vehicle it sits in quarantine racking up storage and red tape costs then the owner is forced to sell as it is no longer worth it.

It's not quite that easy. :( 'm guessing your car came in as Personal Import?

Unfortunately, unless recently granted, Peter Smith Engineering does not have RAWS compliance for imported Minis after 1988. They were able to do "low volume" compliance on later cars prior to the major law change in 2005(?) and are still able to do compliance for personal imports (ie: owned 12 months plus overseas). :(

Pre-1989 models camn be imported without restriction. You still need DOTARS approval, but that's just a formailty. $50 to the Govt for nothing!

Shipping a car without import approval would be fraught with danger! My Corona sat in a warehouse in Japan for a few weeks while the govt paperwork went through, even though there was no reason DOTARS would reject it. Most reputable importers won't put it on a ship until permission is granted anyway.

Cheers,

Sport 5's car came in brand new as a direct import at his cost, but that was before the recent import law changes.

Peter Smith has (had?) one of the most professional set ups for compliancing I have ever seen. A real professional. 8)

Yes, as I already said above. You must prove it. (12 month Visa, utility bills etc). They may also check your movements in and out of the country.

Just on that though Brett , if someone was living overseas for 12 months and you bought the car in their name and imported it in their name , do they have to own it for a certain time in OZ before they can "sell" it to you or is it open slather once it's here and complied ?

Hi all,
I'm heading back to the UK for a holiday later in the year, and would love to bring a Rover Mini back with me. Has anyone done this from the UK? If so, what sort of cash is involved in getting a car over here?
Cheers!!!
Daz

Hi Daz,
There are NZ new Rover Minis here and it might be easier to bring one across the Tasman. Just a thought.

As far as I am aware there is no restriction on selling a personal import once it's in the country. But it must be imported by an Aussie returning to Aus, or someone migrating to Aus (ie: Aussie citizenship or permanent residency status).

I know of at least one importer using this loophole. It seems the Aussie staff they send to Japan buy a car each - something that can't usually be imported. They stay over there for 12months, then return to Oz bringing the car. The car is legally complianced and sold. The staff member goes back 12 months later and the process repeats itself. I have heard rumours they will also do similar deals with Aussies heading to Japan for 12 months.
