My van (sold) has a D4R85 in a modified 1132 engine. No issues.

My Moke A+ 1275 has a D4R85 also. Also no issues. :)

Highly recommended mod. Takes about an hour max and the dizzy and coil are $40 at pick-a-part. :)

Interesting....

Well as I said I will contact Graham Russel when I know when I'm going so he knows that a dodgy mini-lover from will be stopping in to say hi, then coming back to pick the dizzy.

Have you done a stock one?

I'm running a stock one. No problems, and yes it's better than a crap small bore 850 dizzy, although I reckon the Cooper S dizzy would be really good too, but they are expensive and hard to find.

The D4R85 gave my car the top-end it needed. The old 850 dizzy was thrashed and was reaching amx advance tooearly, gave good low-end but no top end. people who saw my car at the dyno day could vouch for this. Now if I went back to the dyno it would be much better now!

I don't need to do a stock one. There are PLENTY of threads about why NOT to run a stock one, use the search function.....
And if you don't want to listen to me, don't Listen to MR Russell.

As I said I would prefer to run a points. if others want to run pulsar, good for them, just don't run a stock one without knowing what CAN happen.

Re comparing an old clapped out 850 dissy to a much younger pulsar dissy isn't a fair comparison. You should be able to get a good perforamce out of points. Just find a decent one, it's not as if mini dissy's are hard to find or expensive.

Again, there are plenty of posts on this and if your keen to actually know the FACTS then go read them

I have a stock Pulsar dizzy on my stock Morris 1100 and it is great.
It starts better than a points dizzy.
I get better fuel economy with it.
I have used it with a stock 1¼ carby and also with twin 1¼s.

It also works much better on a stock 1100 than a Cooper S dizzy (I have tried!)

A question for the Lucas experts, which is better on a 1275, a Lucas 25D6 or a Pulsar? Why?

It appears you haven't run one.

I am and I love it. Guess what, my 850 dizzy was rebuilt by Rhemac motors. Yes it was dodgy, but guess what 850 dizzys are.

I voted for "I run one, and I like" or something simliar, and it seems so have many other people.

<edit> Yes I have read all the stuff on here about NOT using one, no need to do a search, I've posted in most of those threads ayways.

I took this all into consideration before I put one in. I will get a modded one in, then I shall make a thread about how much better, or differnt I think it is, because I have also read info saying that the 'S' dizzy is not that good for 1275 minis. Interestingly I did a google search on this stuff and found some really nice info. Look back a page I think and see that chart I posted. It actaully also says that the cortina GT dizzy is pretty good for an a-series but doesn't fit like a Pulsar one does.

Have one, very happy. Is it ideal (for engine)? Probably not, but I still prefer it to points. In the other epic thread on this I asked again and again what the so called 'dangers' were...and only really got vague answers, mostly from people who hadn't tried them. From what I could tell they fell in two areas: seized, and over advanced.
Seized: well if you take a dizzy out of a wrecked car in a yard that's probably been sitting with no bonnet for months and fit it without an overhaul then you deserve it. A lucus would do the same.
Over advanced: if you go to the extent of modifying a dizzy to fit another engine type then you should at least be aware of the advance characteristics of the thing. I don't use the vacuum because it would over advance at the wrong times - common sense. If you know where the static advance is, and you know the overall advance, then I am at a loss to see how this can be dangerous. Ideal? No, dangerous? Bollocks.

No i don't run one, I said that, did i not. My infomation comes from Mr Russell first hand. He has seen and has had to rebuild a number of motor's because of the effects of the incorrect curve on the pulsar. That's why he does an ausmini special price of modding them so they work, as he doesn't want to see anymore people have there motors go bang. Simple really. I think I would trust information from an engineer that works on motor 7 days a week for many many years....
As I have said, there's nothing wrong with a pulsar dissy once modified correctly. There is an issue with them if you don't.
YOu may say that it performs better , and it may, I don't dispute that, but that dead spot you feel... whats that doing to you motor?

Again, I will say this, I prefer my DODGY old Lucas Dissy, with my DODGY old Points. Is there anything wrong with that, is that ok with you?

Tell me this though, do you just like to argue

Well actually, I do :)

How odd for two people on Ausmini with two different opinions to go on and on and on. The risks have been advertised and those that wish to take the risk can pay the bills if it all goes south , those that dont want the risk can keep changing points and those that wish to run to modded Pulsar dizzies can ignore both of the previous.

I think all the info is out there for all three points of view and the choice is up to you.

Me Im staying with the standard points and Lucas until I learn more about the Pulsar dizzie so I can make an informed decision without all the carry on.

The two main reasons for this 'Pulsar Dizzy Problem' as stated by another Ausminier happy with his mod. Is, seizing, and over-advancing. You do need to know what you are doing before you do it. Unfortunately the problem on Ausmin that many people complain about is that 'it is the wrong curve', and yes it is. But is the stock one right for a modded engine, and the answer is no it isn't. The only problem with the nissan one over a Cooper S one, for decently powered mini's only. Is the lack of early advance. The Nissan one never overtakes the 'S' one in terms of total advance at any given point, but almost equals it. The problem I had with the 850 dizzy, was lack of advance high up, as the 850 dizzy isn't meant for total performance. The 'S' one is. So really, the Nissan dizzy is less dangerous that putting an 'S' dizzy in. Basically never change to a differnet curve without thinking first. The early flat spot, is due to lack of advance, hardley dangerous, engine may run hot, but at 1500 rpm, I don't think i care, I'm always above that anyways. By all means, stay with the Morris one, nothing wrong with points, I changed due to wanting a Cooper S like curve but I just couldn't afford the 'S' dizzy.

Note - Over advancing can happen with any dizzy. If you set a stock, or 'S' dizzy statically to high, it have trouble starting and all, but it can, and probably will blow the hell out of your motor, it's all relative.

Back on this thread, as a conclusion. The Pulsar dizzy is good as an alterantive to an 'S' dizzy when more total, higher rpm advance is required. If your running a farily stock small bore, a Pulsar dizzy, is not an improvement really. But on anything high power it is. I know a guy running a stock D4R85 in his supercharged bigbore, he races it, and he's never had a problem.

I went for a Pulsar dizzy for one very simple reason - wet weather driving. (if we ever get any :? )

I'm too mean to spend the money on an electronic bolt on and I liked the idea of moding something to do the job at a fraction of the cost. Now that I am rebuilding the engine to have a bit more grunt then it's a bonus.

I like it because (apart from performance) the timing stays put. Over a 12 month period, whenever checked it was still spot on. I do also have a belt drive, which doesn't stretch like chains do. 8)
Its zero spark scatter (compared to any points Lucas) helps power too.
