3 Synchro remote: 22A1288, 22A1522, 22G190, 22G333, 22G68

All depends on the laygear and first motion gear. Majority of them were 3 sydnchro Deluxe gearboxes with a different ratio to the coopers.

not sure about that.... the MK1 S box is different to the normal 3 synchro boxes in that it has casting clearances on the inside for the long stroke 1275 crank.

waiting for a response from a MK1 S guru

Generally taken as being 22G333, but watch out, there are non S ratio 333 out there too.
I think 1071's got 22G190, and I have seen (got) 22A1288 with S gears too!

it's OK... I'm planning on passing off a non S casing as an S, so I don't care what's in it :D

I'm kidding, kinda - it's basically just the case that makes it S or not, the gearsets can be bought

That makes sense, it's an S box if the number is right :?

I thought it more important to have the right ratios as well, anyone can fix casting numbers these days.

Anyway, according to my reference it's 22G333 casing number and part number 22G331

Daniel

Simon, my F-I-L has a 1 owner 100% original Mk 1. I can check with him for a number if you want. It might confirm what others have said.

Simon, if I can dig my way through the long grass I will try to take a look at the gearbox number on my S.

that would be lovely.... you've really gotta drag that little thing out and put some number plates on it....

thanks to you too Anton, the more the merrier :)

Daniel, it's really the other way around, you can buy a new gearbox worth of parts, IMHO the ratios don't matter, it's the casing number, which I can't see being 'faked'.... I know that MK2 22G1128 casings have a number stamped on them, but even then, not all casings got stamped and it's identical to a Mini K casing.... so with the right ratios, any 'box that is identifiable as the correct casing number and ratios is an S box - maybe that's what you're saying too.

Here's a silly example, maybe it's much the same as saying a Cooper S door is different to a Mini K door - or how about Cooper S hydrolastic springs have an orange band on them, but I pulled a pair off a shitbox deluxe....

I just had a look (after removing a few clumps of grass) I can't see past the oil cooler, starter and the oil filter in the dark and it has sunk into the dirt so I can't see under the sub-frame. I will try again tomorrow in daylight.

As for sticking numberplates on it, nice shiny new number plates would look out of place on it.

A couple of weeks! It has taken me 24 years to get the S into the condition that it is in and you think that I could rush a pair of numberplates into a couple of weeks.
