If the printed circuit on the back of a set of Clubman S gauges is broken.....what happens?

I have 2 sets with the circuit split where it joins the tacho.... One was soldered, but this has now broken too......

Go buy another one?

im an electronics technician by trade... and circuit boadrs are usually easy to fix believe me ive done hundreds (dropped stereos etc)

if the copper track is broken all you do is gently scratch off a section of the usually green coating which insulates the copper track on either side of the break.. (enough to solder a link to) 5mm should be enough.. then get a short piece of wireto cover the distance between the two cleared copper pads put a quick solder on each pad and a quick solder on each end of the wire (hold the wire gently with needle nose pliers and do it quick as the heat will melt the insulation...when its cool solere each end to the respective pads and bingo... the actual board itself can be glued if needs be..

What happens if I leave it broken? Will the gauges not work or is it for the dash lightS?

The lights in tacho won't work, nor will the tacho read. The 12V feed comes from the PCB, the trigger wire to coil is a separate circuit.

if the board is broken but the copper track is still intact it will work (for a while but it will break and probably sooner than later.. a bit of glue will save it... with the track brolen it more than likely wont work (unless its just an earth, and it has another) or the pad was purely for mounting purposes... neither of these is likely though.. if you fix it it will be as good as new.

if my clubby had a dash id have a look to see exactly what you mean

Jeff, I think this particular break in the S set of gauges is common. It's a weak link between the tacho and the other 2 gauge pod. The tacho is like an after thought on the side.

hard to say without seeing it but might be a good idea to think about improving the rigidity of the item...can you brace it a bit maybe glue or splint on it is the break mid board, or at the edge where a guage is attached might be another usefull mod for your site if ita a common drama

One thing to be very aware of anton is that being a very fine plastic PCB ( it is about as thick as a couple of sheets of paper dani dad, not actually a board) Hence you will need to use a very low heat soldering iron as you can easily burn and melt it. I had and now have again one in my clubman. Mine was originally broken and i soldered it with a low heat iron and all was fine. Danidads idea with using a thin wire between would go good as as when the PCB bends it doesn't break the join. It'll last quite a while if not forever. Just comes down to how often you pull the dash out.
By the way, i am sure most of you guys already know but the PCB's from the UK are different and you can use them with aussie guages.
