How easy (or hard) would it be to mount an 850 push button to my Matic bodyshell?

I love the pushbutton start... very very retro.

I suppose I could cut out the whole section from and 850 and have it welded to the Matic.

Which brings me to:
Are they available new?
And if not, does anyone have one they'd want to get rid of

Cheers.

They are available new - often see them new and s/h on UK ebay. Same item as early model Land Rover had mounted in the dash.

Just need a 3/8" or so hole drilled in the floor. The push button switch is separate from the "cup" that surrounds and protects it. - Now that may be difficult to locate  Also new ones don't always have the big round button the screws on the shaft - need that too

Tried to post a link but it won't cut and past - poke around www.scparts.co.uk under Mini and electrics and MK1

Timmeh... do you have the complete 'setup'?

If so, I am quite interested. :)

Well I did. I know where the switch is but I went through a "I'll never need this so who cares" phase with my car early on. So the cup is somewhere in the shed (4 car garage shed....). I am intending soon to do a shed clean out. It should be findable but my shed clean out may not be for some time. I'll have a look through some boxes of 850 'bits' I have and see if it's in there. Fitting it should be easy. I repalced mine with a battery isolater switch. It's close to the exhasut so I thought it might melt or break but nope, a whole year, no problems.

Ok I found it all, in bits. I'm quite happy with myself, I got off my arse and searched. I found a box of mini stuff under some other crap. I found some good stuff in there. Including two of those wing nuts things from the twin SU air filter. I have heard they are a bit rare but you would probably be able to use two single ones for a set of twin anyways.....back on topic...

Here's a pic.

I'll tell you if it's for sale after I bother my dad about it, he has a big finicial share in my car and it's bits.

Fit it as an anti-theft device....and tell your insurance company....I know of a recent case where low-life, bottom feeding, scum sucking, losers hot wired a Mini but couldn't start it because they didn't know about the starter

willy the floor pressing there is much the same whether 850 or MiniMatic, just drill a hole for the switch and mod the wiring to suit.

I hope it's a manual car..... it's not safe starting Mini automatic other than in N.

Hey willy

I've fitted a floor start to my deluxe because I also love them! It's so funny now jumping in a "normal" car and reaching for the floor :) (I've also got my ign on the floor)

If you only want the floor start without it being exactly like the early 850 you can do it much easily by mounting a bracket in the right spot mount a starter type momentary switch (which you can buy at most auto stores) and run the new 'start' cable from some constant 12v source inside the car to one side of the switch, then cable from the other side of the switch to the 'start lug' on the starter solenoid.

Sorry if I'm going into too much detail... but this is the way I've done it as it's much easier than running battery type cable under the car...

Have fun with it :)
