I would hazard a guess that you had way too much fuel vapour and not enough air in the boot of your mini for it to explode. That's why you're not dead. ;)

Yeah, figured it was something like that.. and that given, I wonder if I'd left the boot to vent juuuust a little bit more before extracting the can, whether or not it would have ended in tears...

little bit more air , or if you'd slammed the boot shut causing a smidgen of compression , or if a truck thundered past forcing air in , or , or , or .... Don't go down that path , many of the possible scenario's could have ended with burnt bits ....

Another thing, I really have no idea why I'm not dead. There really was so much fuel in there, and good, powerful sparks..

For an explosion to be created by petrol it first needs to vapourise. There is a minimum ratio of fuel vapour to air below which ignition will not occur. At the same time, there is also a maximum ratio of fuel vapour to air, at which ignition will not occur. These limits are termed the lower and upper explosive limits. For petrol vapour, the explosive range is from 1.3 to 6.0% vapour to air.

I would hazard a guess that you had way too much fuel vapour and not enough air in the boot of your mini for it to explode. That's why you're not dead. ;)

i was gunna say sumthing like that - thats the reason you should have left the boot closed instead of opening it. ohh wellll

My trolley jack collapsed when i was about to get underneath the mini. Luckily I put spare wheels underneath the car for supports. I was only doing a two minute job and contemplated not using the spare wheels. :? Dont buy cheap and nasty hydraulic jacks.

I have almost been killed at trade school twice. Neither occasions were my fault, just in the wrong place at the wrong time. A kid lowered a Suzuki Vitara on to the 5.5ft tall bright green oil drainer. The car was totally suspended by the oil drainer. The oil drainer crumpled and I was about 2 feet away from the car with my back turned. Needless to say the car came crashing down.

The other time, I was working at the bench in front (about 5 feet) of a big 4 poster hoist. We were told to be very careful when using it as it has a tendency to sometimes stick on one corner. The kid lowered the hoist without watching at all. The back left stuck and the car came rolling down. Once again my back was turned and the commonwhore rolled into the post in line with me.

Matt

Not my Mini, but my mate's one did, when we hit a tree years ago. Went real close to killing me- had 5 months in hospital with leg in traction, 10 months off work. I still have a limp to remind me....

Moral of story- don't assume the road round that next corner is yours- some damn fool in a Porsche or whatever may be on your side.

I was 17, my 16yo girlfriend had a mini K which I used to work on for her. I was doing some running repairs (exactly what I cant remember) parked at the front of the old Burwood wreckers on Parramatta Rd near the bus depot.
I had just extacted myself from under the front of the car, right under, and had just twisted myself around to bring my head out from under the sump when the Jack let go. All I ended up with was a superficial scratch on my forhead.
To this day if I dont have stands then you can bet the wheel and or spare will be under there with me.

It astounds me how many people are willing to climb under their car with no jack stands :?

I am tipping the fuel / air ratio became right when the boot lid was opened, lucky to be alive alright. There was a pic in the VMCI club mag a while ago of the incinerated remains of a mini that did just that and the warning never to carry a fuel can in a boot that has a battery in it. In that case the wheel brace touched the battery because there was no boot board, created the spark and up she went!
