The granules are not totally harmless, my eldest brother has a lot of problems with his eyes after he stuck his head through the toughened winscreen in his first Morris 1100.
He has no tearduct in one eye and he has eyelashes that grow inwards instead of outwards.
You see that while your head can go through a toughened screen a lot easier than with a laminated screen it may do a fair bit of damage to your face as it passes through. 8)

ok so, what we all need is laminated glass (wont bust into a million bits) and some really good sealt belts (stop you busting into the windscreen).

That scenario is what happens with the laminated screens, whereas the old toughened ones just shattered into harmless granules. But with no belt you might keep going forward, finish up in front of the car.

were late aussie minis fitted with toughened screens as opposed to laminated? i'm constantly finding little bits of glass all through my car, no sharp edges.

my windscreen may ahve this sandblasted effect think, it looks like heaps of tiny little pinprick sized specks that dont wash off. possible to remove or time for a new 'screen? the date on it is 12-89

oh and sorry to hijack :D

The main reason the inspectors don't like sand blasted screens is it scatters the light and when driving into the sun you have more glare to contend with

If you have a late car and it has bits of glass through it the car may have had a side window smashed.

As for sandblasted screens, I once got a laminated screen for my 1275LS that must have been fairly soft glass, the screen was badly sandblasted within 12 months. It took the original screen 9 years to get as much damage as this on had.

Some pollutants can leech minerals out of glass, leaving permanent etching in the surface. Perhaps this is the cause?

This is also the case for mould on photographic lenses and mirrors.
