Could the run through the valley, where it was probably slipping, have worn the belt down to the wear indicator?? (you know the metal matt some belts have that squeal to tell you they need changing??)

I doubt it, more likely it cooked the belt surfaces and buggered up the friction between belt and pulleys.
Belt is not cracked anywhere, but the sides of it have been HOT...

I used to use a bar of soap - with the engine idling the soap was carefully put in contact with the contact surface of the fan belt. Contrary to me believing it would slip, stopped the squeaking and no slipping. Dad used it all the time and never caused an issue.

I am using the Bosch toothed belt but it is noisy(was always using the QH before that - no squeaking) so when this one annoys me to the point of stabbing my temple with a knitting needle, I will go back to the QH.

Good luck with it Kev...
