Wow!

Yeah when the good Doc told me sternly to cover the boot with carpet i did it promply and now I am glad that I did! Best $5 bit of carpet I ever bought I think

For extra safety I pile an old rag over the live terminal... you never know...

Makes me think long and hard about my fuel pump problem eh Kev? :?

I actually had a slight fire in the Clubby on Saturday. While waiting for Anton to rock up, I decided to braze the front and back of the new sill onto the car (makes a neater job than MIG).
Anyway I had an extinguisher and the hose handy.. good thing too. The previous owner had done all the trim in black, had this black `pretend carpet' stuff glued onto the wheel wells and under the doors. I had pulled it all back, but.. there was still some tar etc on the body. I'm under the car with the oxy, and UP she went!
My wife saw the flames go up past the windscreen...
Threw some water at it- minor damage- is only the crap `carpet' and the LH door trim is a bit blistered. We were going to retrim it anyway.
No, it isn't insured at the moment... :P

The boot rubber had a tear in the middle of it, so the coat hanger had fallen down on to the batterty. I had a box of rubbish in the boot. Holding junk in it. I just chucked the stuff that was on fire, the oil bottle, cloth and box on the gravel, and all the people came to have a look eventually. They were standing around saying. Wow theres steam coming from the mini, and when i had finally put everything out the came over and said . Hmm, it was a fire.
I could think of what to do. It was scary all i could think of was, How am i going to get home tonight, and how am i going to get to work tomorrow? I had visions of the whole mini being burnt into a liitle piece of black stuff. And then it occurred that i should just chuck everything out. And i did. i was throwing my spare backup radiator leak wate while the fire weas in the car. The oil bottle was right near the fuel tank and i was waiting for it to go BANG, whilst standing a foot away from it :? .
But in the end all was well, and umm boot = no put anything at the moment

It was very scary :(

Coathanger would have glowed red hot- nice for lighting fires...!

Mini Mad had the same event a while back, only it was with the Mini jack. Dead shorted the battery and welded to the terminals. I had to cut it off.. and the battery was dead meat. Stuffed it totally.

Moral- for safety, you really do need some sort of insulation to cover the battery. Either original cover, or a hunk of carpet, or plywood, rubber, whatever.
I find carpet is good, doesn't make things sweat like rubber does.

That jack was stuck on there REEAAL good! I had carpet in there..but the jack was underneath near the spare wheel...Those chicanes near your place are just too tempting kev...shifted everything around  was bound to happen sooner or later though..shorted out the electrical system and a newspaper in the boot caught on fire

Kindly, Mini HaHa donated a bit of it's life and i was back on my way :D

I'm looking to fabricate a battery cover similar to the original out of a plastic battery box I picked up on special at Supacrap. I have an original that is falling apart but intact enough to use as a template. The plastic is quite sturdy and wont rot and is the right size for a battery. I'll let you know how I get on.
