Hi, I am going to put disc brakes on the front of my Mini Clubman. I am currently working on the body and believe I will need to fit flares. My dilemma -

The vehicle currently has no flares and the tyres fit inside the mudguards (car is standard). So that I can work out the width of the flares, I need the dimension from one front hub to the other (ie - the distance between the flat surfaces where the wheels bolt onto) for -
1) drum brake set up
2) disc brake set up
The increase in distance between the drum and disc dimensions, should tell me how wide I need the flares. Note: I want to keep the flares as narrow as possible.

A guess would be, that the wheels will sit and extra 25mm further out on either side from where they are with drums if using S brakes...... Wat brakes are u intending on fitting?

I intend on buying a new set of 7.5" Cooper S discs from Minisports.

I have been watching a numbers of posts, etc and believe by the time I refurbish a second hand set, the price will probably cost about the same.

Its cost $731 so far... But its all new bits. To take the track from drums to S spec, i needed to add a 25mm spacer to each wheel.

Hi Alf,

The need for flares will also depend on your wheel and tyre choice. I run S discs on my 68 deluxe with no flares.

What are you using as whells and which tyres were you going for?

I was going to run Yokohama 165/60's on a 12x4.5 inch rim. The rim is a 8 spoke, supposedly off a Rover Mini. The offset is all inwards. I would like if possible to run with no flares as I think the body lines look smoother.

I like the description of your car.

My car currently has bog standard wheels with 145's. If I know how wide it is across the front I assume I can then try the 12's on, and understand where the 12's will end up.

If you're not actually making the flares...well stop worrying about it...just fit MKII Cooper S or Group 2 flares and you will be AOK

Sound's right in theory but it'll run close. The rover coopers had factory fitted flares, indicating that a chrome strip was insufficient.
