Dads being using a full synthetic 15w 40. Can we use a full 10w 60 full synthetic? Or should we go to a semi 15w60?

Use anything but a synthetic oil in a Mini, i dont think the gearboxes n diff like fully synthetic stuff....

for a bmw mini? or a classic one?

for a bmw mini, check your owners manual, it will specify what oil to use.
for a classic one, you want any non synthetic 20/50

Penrite HPR30 for a decent older engine
HPR40 for an oil burner

Penrite HPR30 all the way. I used to use this in all my Mini's (when I had one ) and it was great. Maintained good oil pressure in lotsa conditions, never too thick (in Melbourne's climate) so I was never worrying about stone-cold starts.

Mind you, I never did one of those laboratory tests to prove the engine was as-new after 150,000km, so what do I know.

Castrol Edge 25W/50 is better than HPR30 Penrite IMO, but they keep putting the price up..

<edit> I found the Penrite sludged around the filler cap neck a bit after 1000 miles, the Castrol doesn't.

I have 3 cans ot KMX 20W/50, at less than 1/2 the price of Castrol Edge it's worth a try. I change the oil at 1500 miles anyway.

I have to say my Mini has been running on the above since it was changed from Formula R. I decided the other week to try out the KMX stuff it seems to be pretty good so far. Oil pressure is slightly better as well. Btw that KMX stuff is 20w/50.

Multi grade oils are fine but the narrower the grade variance, the better the brew. 15/40 is good, 10/60 is getting to wide in my opinion. The problem is difficult to make the oil so that it performs accurately over such a wide range of viscosities. Mini's were made to run on something between 30 and 40, so my advice would be to stay within that area unless you're doing something pretty out of the ordinary. I use Shell Helix Plus semi synthetic 15/40 and it works well.

Too hot in Oz for 40 grades.... except maybe in winter.
General recommendation here is 20W/50, for manual or automatic.
