If u read Vizards books he explains that as air rushes into the throat of the carb, the 90 deg edge around the end of the throat (firewall side) causes turbulence, and makes the air unstable, by either removing that 90 deg edge or fitting these stub stacks, it makes the air flow into the throat of the carb much smoother.

Its a full science behind aerodynamics....
