Quick question on flashing up some 8.4" 2 pot calipers: the little metal rings that hold in the outer seal (dust seal?) are a little pitted and manky. Do these come with a seal kit by any chance?

Also, related question - are the mini disk hub and drum hub ball joints the same part? (I know metro are different)

On a Cooper S the metal retainer rings come in the kit so 8.4s should too.
All Mini ball joints are the same.

the MM site shows 6 rings, like in an S kit- 4 would be rubber and the other 2, metal.

Although the kits come with new retainer rings, I wouldn't throw out the old ones.
Make an efort to keep them in good nick when you remove them. If the newies get mangles when you reassemble, you'll b glad you have spares.I know.....I've done it before.

I made a special service tool to fit the rings. it's a short bit of 50mm polycarbonate bar with a recess machined in the end 8mm deep and same diameter as piston.
I push the piston into the fluid seal leaving 8mm sitting out, fit the seal ring into the steel retainer, and slide it down the piston.
Then I put the service tool against it, and hit it gently and square with a BFH. The tool pushes it in flush all around.

I agree, do save the old rings if any good.
