As in, who still has a cartridge style oil filter on there engine?

Or who has the more modern spin on style of oil filter?

Those of you that have the cartridge style filter, do you have any tricks of the trade that make changing it less of a mess during filter changes?

I have a cartridge. My engine is auto, so all you people with you manuals
can't complain if you make a mess because you shouldn't in the first place!

That said, a plastic bag can help.

You're not participating fully in a mini oil change unless there is oil dripping from your elbows and running all the way down to your underarms. Spin on filters do not allow this essential part of mini experiences to occur.

Nah, i use plenty of newspaper, and make sure my oil pan is under the filter as im undoing the long bolt. I keep the bolt inside the cartridge housing, then remove the entire thing off the filter head and carefully manouvere it down past the gearbox/subframe. Tho some oil is bound to be spilt....

I serviced 3 cars yesterday, my Gf's Excel, my Crummodore and the Mini...

The mini was the only one that spilt any oil....

Hah, try changing the filter on a Toyota 16R or 18R. The filter is a spin on and is mounted upside-down. So as soon as you break the seal about half a litre of oil starts going everywhere. Just as messy as a cartridge Mini filter.

If you've got a manual and you're not an originality freak, swap to a spin on and make life easier.

There's no option with an Auto. Spin-ons can't stand up to 180psi pump pressure. Necessary to give enough pressure for the autobox to work, although the engine only sees the usual 70-80psi max.

I'm sure if you get clever you could adapt something from a light truck.

try having to get the blastgered thing off because some *expleetive entered here* tightened the damn thing up too much, not having the proper tool and therefore resulting in having to puncture it with a screwdriver jam it in its side and hope you can get enough leverage to turn it. Can I say oil all over me not just down to my pits but across and down my chest too. I forgot to mention it sliped out of my hands poured over my face and down my neck too. Thnakfully wasn't toooo hot but hott enough to sceram f***ing hell thats bloody hot.

your all soft, Alfa 33, its on upside down, and the extractors run below the filter, then the drain plug is also hard to reach, and has a loose captive nut that moves arround. not a fun situation, or a nice smell afterwards.

as for the mini, um hows about removing the grille?

What model Commodore I have done a zillion oil changes on several models, all with spin on filters and its still easy to spill oil when removing the filter

On cars with spin-on filters that are mounted upsidedown the trick is to punch a hole in the top (bottom) of the filter and let it drain back into the sump before undoing it. Saves a lot of mess.

For people with Minis with cartridge filters make sure that you don't lose the spring. I have seen a lot of Minis with the filter sitting in the bottom of the can.

Its a VR V6 Crummo.. I jack the passenger side of the car right up, puncture the bottom end of the filter with a small hole and let the oil drain into a container.

Ok so, there was like 2 drops of oil when i did the crummo....

The Nb race mini had the original until Thursday !!

Minor leak on Wednesday so changed filter again (had misaligned top seal and broke it) and no chance to test before heading off for wheel alignment on Thursday morning...

... to find I'd misaligned even worse and after rolling off the trailer and starting up pumped about 2 litres of oil on there forecourt ..... so straight home and "stole" the spin on head off the clubman - no more leaks !

(Now searching for one to get the clubman ready for rego... )

I used to own a CRX - and the oil filter was up the back of the engine and high up ... so basically impossible to get too unless on a hoist !
