After a big day renovating i really needed a drink. So i clutched grey and headed for the bottle shop. 500 metres i stall, clutch it keep goin. another 30 metres i stall, clutch it, not to convincing, but keep goin. Nearly made it to the only set of lights and stall it. push through the green light down hill clutch it and made it to the pub after one more clutch start. Get talking to the kiwi drive thru guy who once bought 7 minis back home with him in a container and grey dies. He admired has i scoffed greys behaviour. Clutch out of drive thru to no avail. Grey had no more. Call me mate mal to the rescue. After sinkin a couple of scotches in the car park, mal arrives. Threw on the jumper leads and still not turning over. Check spark, OK. Battery voltage Ok. Check fuel cannister, no good. Spray wd 40 into carbie and grey fires. Tamper with fuel pump and of greys starts. So i guess it was the fuel pump drawing to much voltage or something. Hope it was the only problem. Have to put on new fuel pump, which means converting car to neg earth. i've been told to do this i change battery and coil terminals over, take fan belt off, and let idle for ten minutes which re polarizes generator. Will this work and be successfull.

Dr mini gave a good description recently of changing the polarity , pretty simple from memory . As for the other , as an experiment runa jumper laed from the earth (positive at present) terminal of the battery to a bare metal part of the engine and see if it will start from the key . If not do the same with the negative BUT WITH THE CAR IN NEUTRAL AND WHEEL CHOCKED as it should try and start as soon as you connect the cable to the starter . This will show you if there is a problem with the earth connection or somewhere in the power cable running the length of the car or the floor starter . If it still doesn't wind over like that and you know the jumper cables are good then look to the starter .

When you say the battery supply is OK, where do you measure it and under what state, idle or trying to start? Take a reading at the starter motor as you try to crank it and compare this with what you read at the battery terminals. If the terminals are clean, there should only be around a 1/2 volt difference. To me, it seems like either you have dirty battery terminals or it is the battery that is terminal.

check to see if the exhaust has been rubbing on the terminals of the floor starter. that is what happened to mine when the PO put a deluxe pipe on it instead of 850. it occasionally shorted, killing everything.

also bad earths will kill it, so make sure yours are good, and that there are no extra earth leaks.

cheers
