Just pulled the cooper block off of the gearbox. I was just out there still in my good duds from the day for a bit of a poke around, and one thing led to another......and off came the engine!

Now the part number is nowhere to be seen on the laygear for reasons unknown, so I counted the number of teeth on the 1st motion shaft(back far left of box) at 18. I seem to remember that this gear is peculiar to the close ratio boxes. Am I right?

It's an all synchro box, with 18T 1st motion shaft yes it has S gears. The cluster gear will be stamped 22G1040.
Mini K box was similar but had 17T one, and different cluster gear.

If it was a 3 synchro box, that gear would be 20T for a Cooper or S, but 19T for all the others.

Yeah it's 4-synchro thanks.
Good, I thought so, It's the cluster gear where I can't find the part number, not the laygear (late night mini parts confusion).

still, happy with that. Something crazy going on with the primary gear however. Pics this arve and an explanation.

number on the cluster is stamped in the middle. If it has the 18T 1st motion shaft, it must be a 22G1040 cluster- the others just won't mesh with it.

(please excuse my ignorance)

... all synchro gear box ...

... not a standard feature on mini's, but rather an upgrade, an upgrade that provided longer gear ratios ??

I suspect that my mini has either larger ratio's or an all 4 synchro gear box ... I'm just trying to understand why that is a good thing? and how to check to see if it is the case? (ie gear box whine?)

Any info would be most welcome.

All Mk2 Minis had 4 synchro boxes, and the Coopers had a the shorter gear ratios, less of a jump between gears.

Gear______Mini_________Cooper S/997/998
1st______3.628:1_________3.200:1
2nd______2.172:1_________1.916:1
3rd______1.412:1_________1.357:1
4th______1.000:1_________1.000:1

reverse___3.628:1_________3.628:1
