Isn't the dishwasher too caustic for chrome or alloys?

I once put in a shiny new meat tenderiser into the dishwasher, came out with all the chrome removed and looking older than mick's carbs.

Dishwasher powder is the same chemical as used in those water based degreasers you can get at Supercrap. They cost about 20x as much as making up the same concentration from the powder.

Using that stuff cleans alloy really well but leave it too long and it turns gunmetal grey. Anyone seen my carb
