What is the correct type of coil to use?

This is for my GT, which is standard.

I think my coil has pooped itself, and I want to attempt to get it running again this weekend.

Try swapping another used coil first...they do fail, but they are not often the real problem.

So far I have replaced: Points, condensor, dizzy, leads, plugs, carby, fuel filter.

The coil is the only thing I haven't replaced

Still can't start the bastard!

I know it sounds wacky....but, if you have a tacho (some folks don't) check wiring to it hasn't shorted somewhere. That will short out the system and give you NO spark. Happened to me once , replaced heaps of stuff, still wouldn't start, NO spark, then I noticed the wire that ran thru the fire wall from tacho to the coil had melted against the extractors shorting the system, replaced wire, Vvvrrooommm.

Hmmmnn I guess the tach wiring could be dodgy, obviously Anton's GT has tacho as standard, never tried disconecting one, but I suspect it would be in parallel, not in series?

Hmmm....VERY interesting comment!

As Graham said, my GT obviously does have a tacho. Since I bought the car (a month ago?) the tacho has not worked. The PO said it didn't work, and I just thought the ribbon curcuit thinggy on the back of the gauges was knackerd. I haven't checked it yet, but that isa common fault.

On the other hand, I did an engine swap on a Mini a while back and didn't connect the tacho, and sure enough it wouldn't start. Rang Kev (DrMini) and he said attach the wire for it. Sure enough it started after that.

I'll check the tacho wiring on the weekend.

Simon, you say GT40 coil. What is the difference between that and a GT40-T ?

On a similar note, how do you tell whether you need a "resistor" coil or a non one? is there something in my dizzy that will tell me as my current coil has no labels on it

GT 40 is a 3 ohm coil, round, oil filled.
GT40-T is a 3 ohm coil, transformer shape, epoxy filled.
The T's work no better, and some racers say they fail earlier. If ya want one I have one here, near new, price neg.

Mick, the fuel pump was replaced by PO just before I bought the car. It's working fine

Kev....might take you up on that offer. I need to try another at the least to see if I can start the bastard!

[quote]

just a bit topical fuel pumps at the moment. my brothers race cars pump to the swirl tank was not pumping enough to keep the swirl tank above the injector pump pickup for more than about 8 seconds. It was fine on the dyno because they never ran more than that at full throttle for each power run. but at Wakefield last weekend it was dying for a bit, then eventually it would fill the swirl tank up and it would come alive all of a sudden. caused him to have a nasty spin going up the hill, and he stopped about 2 feet from the tryres around the top flaggies shack  he has ordered a new one

cheers
michael
