I thought it was one of the original prototypes. Things could have been very different in a parallel unverse. We would all be in VW's instead if they came out looking like that..

That Italian flag mini (which I have seen pics of before) is awesome. You could drive it past someone you know, then later the other way and they'll go "what happened to the red one?" "I repainted it green".

LOL, that reminds of what a guy a used to work with asked me once.

Before I had my car fully on the road I drove my dad's Yellow 1975 Leyland mini a lot, and he saw my red 1964 850, an dasked me if I repainted it red.......

I kinda like it in an odd ugly duckling way - looks like an Austin A40/Devon parts bin exercise. :?

looks like a complete opening bonnet right to the 'water' line of the bumper bar. would make getting to the dissy easier for all the replacemetn points and condensors...

I like it - id drive it.

I also seem to remember at that stage the engine was turned the other way wasn't it?

The dizzy would be impossible and the speedo cable easy with no carbs in the way.

Yes that's one of the original prototypes (note it's 50mm narrower)- the A30 grille was put on to disguise it.
Photo is in Anders Clausager's book- `Essential Mini Cooper', along with a pic showing the engine fitted arse about.

I love the A30 grills so I am a fan of that one actually. Not as good as the real thing but still nice and a fantastic peice of history.

The mini with mercedes benz headlights looks fantastic in my opinion.

Cheers
Matt

These prototypes were nicknamed "Orange Boxes". Doing the points would've been so much fun!!!!
On the plus side, there was no whining idler gear required. This had to be added when they turned the engine around. 4-speed reverse and 1-speed forward might've been good for motorkhanas tho..........

Here's a pic showing the arse-about engine and the original battery fitment in the engine bay.

The bonnet hook does enough damage to the back of my head now, that bonnet would act like a cheese shredder on me!
