My first car was a 77 998cc LS and now I have 3 minis, I've always used Castrol GTX2. I'm sure there are people on here who would know more than I do about it, but just remember the mini is one of very few cars where the engine and tranny share oil, so regular changes and good quality are incredibly important. Don't get anything cheap whatever you do.

It has to be an organic oil - do not use a synthetic oil but at least one well known engine builder says that the cheap K-mart oil is as good as anything else on the market.

i generally use a 20-50 weight oil.
as far as i have been taught, if you start using a specific oil, keep using that same one because of additives in it and stuff
