Hi

I saw this crankshaft sell on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... &rd=1&rd=1

Cheers

3 or 4 days ago I saw it at about $519 buy it now. He often relists and ups the amount every day.

Is the number en40b stamped on the actual crankshaft and if it is can it be viewed on a short motor ?

Are there visible differences between it and another mini crankshaft ?

it's not stamped, it's cast into it, and yes, you can see it on a short motor

I think that's cheap for an S crank

You are right, it's a forged crank. 8) The EN40B is raised letters, from the forging dies.

I always get a laugh when Poms say they built a Mini donk with "steel crank and rods". What do they think stock ones are, licorice? All A series cranks and rods are forged steel, for those who are wondering. :)

OK - can you explain the difference between casting and forging? I really don't know

Pour molten steel into a mould and cool to 'set' = Cast

Heat steel till soft then bash / squash between big forging tools = forged

Bit simplified, but correct! :P

Forging is heating up a lump of metal and knocking it into shape.
Casting is melting metal and pouring into a mould of the shape.

If you have a choice, forged is stronger than cast. The material's grain follows the shape of the part.
For the same reason forged is stronger than billet, if you are talking crankshafts for example.

wow - forging of a crank must be a pretty neat process to watch....

what does 'drop forged' mean on my spanners? sounds like clever marketing

`Drop forged' just means the top die is dropped/driven against the bottom one, drop forging is an impact process.
It doesn't tell you what material it is, could be drop-forged chewing gum if made in China.

The magic words for good spanners are "chrome-vanadium"...

I've got a set of russian spanners here made from "Chrom Vandium" apparently  .

Not all S cranks have EN40B letters necessarily, later ones (68'ish on?)have an AEG480 part number.
