hi all,

At the risk of asking one of those 'oh not that question again'... questions

As confirmed of this afternoon, the engine in my 78 mini is pretty well stuffed - got it confirmed today....

Now, there was a suggestion made to me of importing a good 2nd hand engine/gearbox from England. The guy suggesting it had done it some years back without issues (for a Mini). I have my doubts on the feasibility of this due to the fact that this doesn't appear to be done very much at all (in general) and if it was such a good idea then others would be doing more of it. ??

So, not to die wondering.... is there a known issue bringing in a 2nd hand engine/gearbox (complete or in some parts) & some complimentary parts from England and getting it in to an Aus mini? (based on the assumption that the engine/gearbox/complimentary parts are well chosen 2nd hand items)

Any thoughts??

There is a mob in that advertise in the MINI Experience mag called "miniimports"
Located in Melb.

They do it for you. My understanding is thet all the engines they bring in require a rebuild.

Not that I know of.
I recently bought a 1275 from an 89 metro (in Australia.) Freight and import duty are the two biggest issues I think.

It's not impossible, it's just mechanical if you want to get it into the country as cheaply as possible.

There's many people along the way who wish to take a piece of the pie.

Not hard however, i did it via email away at sea with no phone contacts or advice to go off. About 1500 dollars all up.

Certainly cheaper to bring them in by the container, but if you're after something special...

There's your problem there. They don't exist.

good call Harley, i agree with that statement as we used to be able to get "good runners" from the uk years ago but there idea of a good runner and our idea of a good runner are 2 different things, we are still buying those motors now but the way of the world has changed so much that to offer them as good runners we are leaving ourselves open to legal action if any part of them is average,as ive noticed that others selling motors are now only offering a start up warranty. Also in the space of 2 years the availiability has dried up considerably and prices have skyrocketed, you might though strike it lucky in getting 1 motor, but most importers are looking for quantities which unfortunately dont exist.hope this helps you out
cheers josh
