If Dad or I drive the mini to the mechanics to get the road worthy (blue slip) done, will we get in trouble if we are caught because the car is unregistered?

In Victoria, VicRoads insure you as long as it is only been driven from the point of purchase to home or from home to RW.

As long as you are driving it to a place to assist in making the car roadworthy, or going for a blue slip than that is fine!

Check with the RTA, but up here in Queensland we also need to have proof of CTP cover in the car. If you've got that cover, you're allowed to drive directly to the mechanic. If you've got the RWC, you're allowed to drive directly to Main Roads to register the vehicle. That's what I did a couple of months ago...

Yes has to be your closest authorised blue slip station.

But you dont need the CTP in NSW.

To drive an unregistered car you need to fill out some permit form and carry it with you.
$60 for 28 days I think.
No driving between 7pm and 7am (night) either.

You've already found the relevant section. Years ago there used to be a requirement to make up a numberplate that said the word "TRAFFIC" when driving it from to and from the blue slip place (the RTA themselves previously). I did one up on the computer and laminated it and everything, then they seem to have changed the rules and no longer require it.

I drove a '64 renault back from the blue slip with no seatbelts in peak hour traffic halfway across sydney a couple of years ago - that was a weird feeling. BTW the seatbelts were installed the next day, the blue slip guy advised me to leave them out (as they were not originally fitted) until after the blueslip lest he have to insist they were engineered. They had been fitted by a previous owner in between the rules being created. I put brand new ones in, using existing mounts.

anyone know if there is a bit of leniency with the nearest inspection station?
there is a mitsubushi dealer around the corner, but in the other direction there is a mechanic that does a lot of work on older cars that is about 1km further away.
