I'd start by giving it a proper service and tune up. I think otherwise you're forced to get bolt on goodies and other such like things.

Yes - I would also suggest getting everything right before any bolt ons.

Slow is a relative term but it should rev freely and be throttle responsive. It should keep up with traffic and it should accelerate quite well from 60 km in fourth gear.

Bolt -ons such as extractors, twin carbs (or a bigger carb) is only going to give you a fairly small percentage increase in performance. Improved head flowing and modifications add to that as does a sports cam. But your only getting about 30% improvement on what you have already.

Another dizzy that is correctly setup is not going to give more performance than a standard one correctly set up. Its only going to make sure that spark is happening properly and that timing is not wandering due to wear.

A whole hog motor is a different issue though - how deep are your pockets.

yeah, depends how much you want to spend,
having a bigger carb and extractors+exhaust makes a huge difference on a standard engine.

if you want to spend less, then get it tuned correctly, make sure the air filter is clean, the timing is correct and your spark plugs, points, leads are all in good order, make sure the carburettor is providing the correct air fuel mixture.

I politely disagree...
I had all these on my standard 998 to gain a very marginal increase... Real power lies in head mods, cam and getting the whole set up to flow correctly. A new dizzy=reliability not huge power increase.

all i can say is when i did that on a standard 1100 it transformed the car completely.

anyway, thats all you can do without taking the engine apart like mad-mk1 said, apart from say bolting on a supercharger kit.

To me it sounds like the engines fairly warn out, so boosting is not a good idea.

Your car shouldn't be real slow, I mean, comparing to your V8 Commi, then yes it will be slow. But it shouldn't be real slow. I can't help ya, I only know what a slow 1275 feels likes (from experience). But a 998? No idea.

I think you might need to get a mate who knows what a 998 should be like to give it a spin or take him for a ride.

It's probably just out of tune, warn out igntion and carbies etc.

If everything is tuned well, carb (jet) is not worn, then I would consider buying a stage1-kit.
Bolts on prety easy and enables the engine breath freely. They come with needle, which almost fits (dyno is good then, but, in my eyes not a "must").

It`s no huge difference to standart, but noticable ;)

And keep your hands off the HS4 carb, except of reconditioning and tune it.
An properbly tuned and set up HS4 is more then enough on a 998.

An other way making it a bit faster is changing the finalgear to a shorter one (like 3,21 or 3,44) if u can live with higher revs ;)

But first instance is to service it completely!

Cheers,
Jan

if you get your eng checked over[ comp, tappets, plugs etc] and you want to add bolt ons, before you start to buy anything, i have various sets of twin S.U.s 45 weber's , extractors, etc to try out on your eng. at the end of the exersise you then know what works and what dos'nt . if you are interested p.m. me

Cheers,
Jan

Jan, here in the land of Oz most of the 998 Clubbies came out with a 3.44.
Roundnose 998s (Mini Deluxe) made up to 1968 had a 3.765.
All 998s (and the rest except 1275LS) had 10" wheels.
Mini production stopped in 1978, so we're living in a time warp. 8)
