 Post subject: Testing Alternator

I don't think my alternator is charging properly, just wondering how to go about checking it's output with a multi meter before i take it to an auto electrician.(the reason i ask this is because i am not overly competant with auto electrics).Standard Lucas system.

If you run the car at around 2,000rpm it should read about 13.8 volts - turn on the headlights and it should stay around the same. At these revs the voltage should be steady and not rise and fall.
