What sort of things do I need to know about the specs of wheels to run mags on the Mini without adding flares?

Also I been looking for a link that was put up once showing the diferent sort of patterns available - but I thinking Contessas

If you are running stock flat drums on the 850, any of the earlier style 10x4.5 or 10x5 Mini mags will be legal without flares.
eg Jellybeans, std offset Contessas, Speedy Hotwires, Dunlops.
If running spacer drums or S brakes the only locally available legal ones without flares I think are the LS offset (ie. inset) Contessas. These are harder to find, and they tend to crack at the back of the spokes so check there carefully.

Thanks Doc - total noob here - How do you tell a standard offset by looking at it?

put a ruler across the outside of wheel. If the 8 `bumps' on the spokes are near flush they are LS offset type.
If there is about 25mm gap there they are standard Mini offset.

Sorry - trying to picture it - if 'nearly flush' doesn't that mean the 'rubber' is further inside the body therefore not needing flares but if sunk 1" into the rim the rubber is further out therefore needing flares?

No not quite-
If spokes flush, (LS offset) the rubber is so far in they DO need spacer drums or they will foul the suspension.
They have been `inset' to make up for the spacer on the drum...

The normal offset Mini ones are legal with flat drums. But if spacer drums or S brakes on like mine, they need flares of some sort.

as far as wheel stylings....i think the miniman..(i think..i dunno the dude in brissy) on his site has a list of the different wheels...and there offsets and stuff..
i think.....dont quote me on that

if you have the normal offset rims and fit spaced drums (all round in my case) will this aid in handling from increased track width and what would it do to suspesion wear, camber, steering weight etc....i have 10 inch jelly beans and need to replace the arches anyway so.......

I have Jellybean 10x4.5 on one car and Mini offset 10x5 Contessas on the other. Both have S discs, and spacer drums rear.
Track is near enough the same. The extra 1/2 inch wheel width stiffens the sidewalls a little which is good.
Bear in mind the Jellybeans etc came out back when a Mini tyre was 5.20x10 or 145-10, the 165/70 tyres hadn't been invented yet. 4.5" width was plenty for a 145.

Mini's, especially lowered ones. Seem to look a lot meaner with spaced drums and discs (or spaced front drums aswell). But will require flares.

Just done a measurement comparison:

From back of face where sits against hub - to inner rim flange edge:
Std Contessa approx 9cm.
LS Contessa approx 11 cm.

Pictures show from opposite side showing difference :
Standard on Left, LS on Right.



Std Contessa (below) - plenty of air under hacksaw blade... (not very clear - but look to the farthest part of the rim and compare with LS photo)



LS Contessa (5.0J x 10 )(below) - hacksaw blade almost touching....

Hi,

Are the LS mags any different to the SS mags?

I have SS mags which don't require flares on my Cooper 'S' discs. The only problem is that I need to run 5mm spacers in order to stop the wheels from hitting the calliper.
