The shroud is the radiator one. If the car is not a 69 model and is aust 65/66/67/68 then the number is on the firewall, generally directly behind the master cylinders. If it is a 69 model then its a Cooper S  and the number is on the radiator shroud. the trouble of course is that there are always numbers on the shroud, so be sure thats the one you are after.

Try to get some paperwork for the car before you go back, even rego papers years and years old, it will make it easier to id.

I find many inspectors now go for the one on the radiator shroud- they are used to Clubbies where that IS the real number.

The guy was actually following us because he also has a mini, same model, same year I think, but a matic. He asked if we were lost, and we said yes, and that we were on our way to go get a blue slip. He told us about this other truck mechanic place that passed his car after it had been sitting in a shed for 6 years, and passed his ute, which he said was a piece of shite. So we thought we might go there if we got stuffed around at this place we were going to.

English bloke? Sounds like David - he also has a BINI.

That would be him. I didnt catch his name. From nowra or something. I told him about here.

I dont particularly want to stuff around with a bac seat. If anything I'll say its only myself and my brother that drives it. neither of us are concerned about driving with passngers (me as a P plater, and troy as a melbournian using to get around while he makes sure his business up here is still gong ok)

Cass , it takes two minutes to put the back seat in and it will show the inspector you've done things to the mini since the last inspection (as well as the other stuff) , you can take the seat out again as soon as you get home again . As said before , if it didn't have seat belts in the back originally it doesn't need them so don't worry about them for the inspection .. A lot of inspectors rely on how a car is presented as much as it's mechanical soundness , a complete car with full interior looks more roadworthy than one without a back seat , especailly if the guy at the RTA has a go at him later about sending a car without all it's seats in for rego . Like most things , presentation is important .

Please read carefully - the back seat issue has nothing to do with what you will or wont do with the car. The blue slip inspector is uncomfortable with the fact that the car is incomplete. And.... in his eyes it raises compliance problems. He is a judge of fact - right or wrong. Humour him - throw in a seat of back seats, its two minutes to fit them (well maybe ten) and it closes the door on a debate you do not need.

Its more the hassle of getting a set of seats off of someone when dad is at work most of the time. The guy doing the blue slip didnt say anything about it being a problem. He just wanted to know where the back seat belts are.

seriously cass think about what these guys are saying, the back seat doesnt seem an issue to you, but it has been an issue before.

ffs, these guys know what theyre talking about they have the experience, and they have cars that are registered and complied u dont.

u can make up as much bull as you want about not having a back seat, but the end of the day, if the inspector wants to be an ass he will.

By putting a back seat in your removing unnecessary questions from the thought of the inspector. Less questions more chance of passing next time round. If you want to print up documentation from the RTA about your model regarding seat belts etc... and bring it with you. But I'm a strong believer in "removing the first question approach" , works a treat as the first question will almost always lead to harder and bigger and more questions. The kind you don't want to be asked. As someone said it'll look more like a complete car rather then a lightened car possibly for racing. A the end of the day its your car and you do what you want to do but I strongly recommend that you listen to all these people giving you pointers in getting it blue slipped.

If the car doesn't have a back seat here in Qld I understand it has to be registered as a two seater, Then if you wish to make it a 4 seater later it will have to comply with the current ADR - It would be a pity to create headaches down the line for the sake of 15 minutes effort. NSW may be different but as everyone is saying keep it simple FOR THE AUTHORITIES. Do what you like later

Checked out this Mini today.

Sure has an oil leak or two!!

Nothing that cant be fixed.

Rocker cover gasket was pretty much stuffed, what appeared to be half a tube of clear silastic around the gasket didn't help it

Replaced the rocker cover gasket with a brand new one, looks a lot tidier and should be more efficient than the other one.

Replaced the plugs & made the mixture a bit leaner, was running horribly rich.

Looks like the timing chain cover gasket is leaking, and also after ready a few threads on here this evening the other two leaks are the diff output shaft seals. Oil is coming out and is getting thrown onto everything around that area. Top the the engine is pretty free from oil, only what was coming from the rocker cover.

Brake and clutch master cylinders would probably do with being replaced, they look pretty scary.

Brakes could also do with an adjustment.

Doesn't blow any smoke when its being driven which is a good thing.

I'd be very surprised if it didn't pass a blue slip inspection first go if those oil leaks & a couple of minor things were seen to.

Unless it has rear discs, brakes can be adjusted.

Handbrake is dodgy as atm.

Probably just adjust the h/b cables.
