i saw a thing on the news a while ago that was being tested in europe or somewhere, which they reckon will eventually be in operation here, where all new cars will be speed limited by GPS so you physically cannot exceed the speed limit of the road you're on. as they say it i'm thinking - what if you have a reason why you need to exceed the speed limit? then they say that you can, you just press a "go" button or something like that and you can speed - but it also sends a message to the cops that you did it and you have to give an explanation.
i can't say i'm over the moon about the idea but it could probably achieve the objective...
I'm not sure the speeding-fine-revenue dept would be too keen on it either

Geoff

You start introducing technical solutions like that and it would be easier to install full auto pilot systems so that there is no human fail points in the control system.

With no humans to make mistakes then the speed limits could be abolished because your trusty transporter would be doing the driving not you.

Then the only place you get to actually control a vehicle would be at an accient history theme park called a rack track.

i read something along those lines a while back too Geoff......i immediately thought that there were some pretty serious flaws....like what if you need to jump on the accelerator for a split second to avoid a prang.....good luck messing around trying to activate the "go button" and then who decides if you have a legit. reason for it after? the cops? cos we all know how reliable and non-biased they are

I think all this crap about capacity restrictions/power-to-weight restirictions is missing a few pretty important, real-life points. For instance, say L & P platers were only allowed a 1.6L four cyl..... they'll save up a few hundred dollars and buy some pile of crap with leaking brakes, stuffed wheel bearings, serious rust damage and all the other good bits old dungas come with rather than being able to drive the parent's well maintained commodore/falcon/whatever, which is far more likely going to be a safer option for everyone. Trust me, just because they're driving an old HOS wont stop some P platers from being wankers and surely it's safer for them to drive like that in a car that has all the latest safety devices and everything working properly ?????????? :?

guess what.....that leaves only one option.....EDUCATION & TRAINING!!!! if there was more effective driver training in this country then there wouldnt be such a problem, its the actions of the driver, not the size of the donk that cause crashes....surely thats whats at the heart of the issue. Authorities should be concentrating on getting the message through to young drivers that its not cool to drive like a dickhead rather than telling them that they're all too irresponsible to drive the regular mid capacity family car

OK

Some high powered cars kill drivers
Milk kill people who are allergic to it.
Do we see any one saying GET RID OF US THE MILK. No.
If some one who is going to kill themselves in a car want to go and buy a car, they will.
If someone allergic to milk to the extreme of death if taken, wants to buy milk, they will.
So i think the problem is milk. :?

Umm
Ok

As i have whinged about many times before. P platers limits down here are 80k's. And not many of you guys knew that. Its real crap when i am sitting at 80 and massive double trailered woodchip and log trucks belt up behind you at 120, on small country roads. And all other cars - but trucks are more scary - They get so far up your ass, that even my drum brakes would cause me to be hit if i used them, and they are shocking.
Down here. WE NEED A P Platers speed limit increase.
Its too Bloody dangerous. Cars see us. They Know we can only go 80. But they leaving to the last minute to slam on the brakes, coming up behind you at 30 k's more than. Yourself. To put it sweetly. it scares the fiddle sticks out of me. People are wankers. I hate everyone
:(

Oh yeah m

Someone close this topic we've had the same **** thing twice now and still havent "resolved" the issue. Take it up with the government if you other people really want things done, no-one reads ausmini (anyone that will make an effort for peoples little sheltered views to be heard anyway)

Keep up the good work willy...at least some1 on here can have some harmless fun.

OUCH this is a touchy subject...
well heres a way of looking at it...
in a lot of us older peoples day, the cars we could afford when we got our licences couldnt go fast enough to get into much trouble, and excelleration that was capable of dragging off pushbikes.. so the problem is a relatively new one, where kids can afford cars that have enough grunt to get them in real trouble if they dont know how to harness it or have respect for its lethal potential..if we had access to the missiles the kids do these days we would have gone crazy too (dont bullshit yourself and say you wouldnt LOL
do we need more restrictions and more authority from the beurocrats who always seem to get it wrong , or be motivated by money rather than public safety??
whats needed is a new look at a new problem
hows this for an idea
1... have regular vehicle inspections for safety sakes and for modifications, if not up to scratch the car comes off the road (much like the NZ warrant of fitness)
2.. make those under 25's whos cars are modified have to belong to a club
3...increase the penalties for wreckless driving on public roads ie gross neglegence and over the top speeds
4 .. use revenue from infringment notices to build these clubs along with a set fee(a user pays system) charge entrance fees etc to watchers...
5... clubs provide extensive driver training, and facilities for the young to try racing in a relatively safe environment..ie dragstrip...Do away with all the public liability bullshit but have club inspectors to see these events are controlled..
6.. give the young ones a go on race tracks < club race days etc..
with adequate facilities there isnt an excuse for street racing...

lets face it we all did some dumb assed stuff when we were young... it will always happen, you cant outlaw youth or bravardo. oppression isnt the answer. boys will be boys. Providing a safer environment for the use of the new missiles would make sense.

I dont think this is the full answer, but i think its a better direction to start looking..

Supercharged, be ver very careful what you say. I have a brother and sister that are both in the army and i am extremly proud of them. They are the ones that will protect our way of life when it all goes belly up. Both are highly intelligent people, and know what they are doing. Responsible enough is the correct thing to say. It reallt isn't worth going into this, so lets just not go there ok.

Cheers

Aaron
