Now i know 9/76 is build date and the last 5 numbers are stamped on radiator shroud. Am i right in assuming this is the chassis or body number?. what are the first lot of numbers. car has 998 and seats 2 only. can anyone shed some light on this for me? Cheers Anthony.

F = complaince code (means very little)
OB = Open Buckboard (really! ) = Moke
1 = Quality level 1 = cheap moke!
M = Manual
09 = 998 motor.

16532 = chassis/body number.

9/76 = date that the compliance plate was attached to the car. (not necessarily the date the car was made)

I'm always amazed at who you manage to decipher the numbers 1100.

It is based on the trim and options, I would imagine it would be a normal vs. Californian thing.

Can anyone refer a site that (clearly for the mechanically impaired) explains about mokes? Their specifications, years of manufacture, original colours/ accessories etc. We are about to welcome one to the family ("the summer car"), all I know is its got two seats and no roof and theres no way I'm going on a highway in it . What is a californian?

erm...gvm = gross vehicle mass? surely not 998kg for a moke?????

Come over to http://www.moke.com.au. You'll find quite a bit about mokes in all the styles and models they came in.

" Californian" was originally the export moke that was to be released for the American market in 1970-72. They had a rear mounted fuel tank as opposedto the side. Sported the "floral" design soft top ,had sunraysia style wheels and a host of other minor mods to please American regulations. Though they never actually got there!!

Today most people associate a cali with 1275 motor, 8.4 front disc brakes, white front and rear bullbars, white sunraysias, denim softtop with tombstone style seats. There were actually a lot of mixes with "californians" in relation to engines and brakes but the above descrition gives you a fair idea of what people visualise when you say "californian"

Spot on. When I went to insure my Californian, the lady asked me whether it was a 1275, 1098, or 998 Californian - according to their computer in 1978 the Californians came out with all three engines.

The engine numbers were only on the BMC id plates up till 1969.
When they introduced Compliance plates they didn't have engine numbers anymore.

dude you are awesome. there is a morris 1100 for $500 near me. i was going to buy it until i found the moke.
