I've just replaced the rear wheel bearings on one side of my machine.

My Haynes manual says the retaining nut torque should be 81Nm / 60lbft, but that feels REALLY tight. Is that the right torque???

The bearings I found when I dismantled the hub were ball rollers with a spacer between.

The bearing kit I have is just two taper rollers with no spacer, but the inner races are extended to take up the gap the spacer filled before.

Am I doing something wrong?

yes the torque is correct.
The tapered rollers when assembled in an unworn hub have about .001" preload, they should feel a little tight when torqued up to spec, but not jerky when turned by hand.

And as a side note, a lot of torque wrenches dont work backwards (left hand thread), so don't overtighten it! :D

I had the wrench problem yesterday. Its weird its got a left and right switch but doesnt click.I just tightened it up then backed it of until it would move at roughly the same time as it clicked

Cool. Thanks for that chaps.

The hub does spin smoothly, but it seemed too tight for a bearing. It'll run in, I guess.

Regards

Jamie
