This is the final drum from some extra research I've been doing. The wrap up is that the airboxes were the same depth up until the mk2 version with the cutaway was introduced.
It is at this point that the English made their boxes 1/4 inch (6mm) thinner to allow the unit to be removed and replaced without hitting the scuttle. The Australian airbox remained the same depth, even though they went to the effort of creating a new pressing with the cutaway Mk2 version. I would presume this is so as not to take away from the air filter's capacity in the dusty Oz conditions.
Well there you go....I would never have have known if I was after a normal mk1 version....
